In June 1829 Joseph Smith, Jr. and Oliver Cowdery came to the Whitmer farm to finish translating The Book of Mormon
Later that month David Whitmer, Oliver Cowdery, and Martin Harris were shown the golden plates by the angel Moroni
An angel also visited Mary Whitmer here to show her the plates
On 6 April 1830, about 56 people were present in the Whitmer home at the official organization of The Church of Christ, later to be called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
The first general conference of the church was held in the Whitmer home on 9 June 1830
The log home on the property now is not a true reconstruction but serves as a reminder of the church's beginnings

Before and after the organization of the church in the Whitmer Home many people were baptized in nearby Seneca Lake
The list of those baptized in the lake includes members of the Smith family (Hyrum, William, Don Carlos, and Catherine), Hiram Page, David Whitmer and Peter Whitmer, Jr., as well as many others.
