Joseph and Emma Smith Home
Key Points of Interest
- Joseph purchased 13 acres of land from Emma's father, Isaac Hale, on 6 April 1828, and he and Emma began living in a home on that property
- Here Joseph began the translation of The Book of Mormon in earnest, with Emma, then Martin Harris, and then Oliver Cowdery acting as scribe
- The 116 manuscript pages later lost by Martin Harris were translated here, as were some subsequent portions of The Book of Mormon
- Later persecution prompted Joseph, Oliver, and eventually Emma to move to Fayette, where Joseph and Oliver continued translation
- Joseph and Emma lived here until June 1829 and then from August 1829 to August 1830
- The home currently on this site is a reconstruction of the original home
